Tourmaline is a very rare gemstone. Although a lot of tourmaline is found, not all of it is suitable for making beautiful jewelry. For Daans Design, I create jewelry with this special gemstone.
Most tourmaline deposits are found in the mountains of Brazil, USA, Africa, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and Russia.
There are many different colors of tourmaline. For example, blue tourmaline, also known as Indicolite, is often found in Brazil, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Africa. Beautiful pink tourmalines are mainly found in California. The most beautiful watermelon tourmaline is found in Brazil and Africa. This tourmaline is called watermelon because it has a green exterior, the so-called rind, and a pink color inside.
Rough tourmalines are often facet-cut into rectangles, step-cut baguettes, or tear-shaped briolettes. The shape I personally find very beautiful to incorporate into my tourmaline jewelry are the tourmaline slices.
These slices are cut from a rough tourmaline crystal. The surrounding edge is left rough, and the front and back are smoothly polished. This allows you to look directly into the heart of the crystal. Often, many different colors are present. These colors are often so special and radiant that they sparkle beautifully in the sunlight. This cannot be compared to any other gemstone.
These slices become even rarer when two slices can be cut from a single crystal. For this, the crystal must be large enough, which is usually not the case!
