Gold-filled is an American standard where the thickness of the gold must be at least 1/20th or 5% of the total weight. In a strictly controlled process, 14 karat gold is mechanically bonded by heat and pressure to a base metal (usually copper).

It is therefore an alloy and not a layer that easily wears off. All gold-filled components come from respected suppliers.

Gold-filled is also well tolerated by people who are allergic to metals other than gold.
